How is the ACT Calculated?

Calculating your ACT score requires two steps: Scaling and Averaging.

  • Scaling: Your raw score (the number of questions you answered correctly) is converted into a scaled score ranging from 1 to 36. Each test section has its own specific conversion curve based on the difficulty of that specific test.
  • Averaging: Your four scaled scores (English, Math, Reading, and Science) are added together and divided by 4 to get your Composite Score.

Rounding Rule: If the average ends in a decimal of .5 or higher, it is rounded up to the next whole number. For example, a 31.5 rounds up to a 32.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these conversions 100% accurate? +
This calculator uses a standard historical curve released by the ACT. Because each official ACT test is slightly different, the curve (or "equating") shifts slightly to account for difficulty. Your official score might be off by 1 point depending on the specific test date.
Does the Writing (Essay) section affect my Composite score? +
No! The optional Writing section is scored completely separately and does not factor into your 1-36 composite score.
Is there a penalty for guessing? +
No. The ACT does not deduct points for incorrect answers. Your raw score is based strictly on the number of correct answers, so you should never leave a question blank!
