How to Calculate Your AP Lang Score
The AP English Language and Composition exam is graded on a composite scale of 0 to 100 points, which is then translated into the final 1 to 5 AP score.
- Multiple Choice (Section I): 45 questions. Each correct answer is worth 1 point. This section is weighted at 45% of your total score. (Total possible: 45 points)
- Free Response (Section II): 3 essays (Synthesis, Rhetorical Analysis, Argument). Each is scored from 0 to 6. The total essay score (out of 18) is multiplied by 3.0556 to make it worth 55% of your total score. (Total possible: ~55 points)
Formula: (MC Correct × 1.000) + (Total Essay Score × 3.0556) = Composite Score.
AP Lang Score Curve (Approximate)
The College Board adjusts the curve slightly every year based on exam difficulty, but historically, the score cutoffs look like this:
- 5: 72 - 100 points
- 4: 60 - 71 points
- 3: 50 - 59 points
