4x8 Sheets vs. 4x12 Sheets
The standard drywall size for residential homes is a 4x8 foot sheet (which covers 32 square feet). However, if you are doing a long wall or a ceiling, you should strongly consider using 4x12 foot sheets.
Why? Because 4x12 sheets drastically reduce the number of seams (joints) you have to tape and mud. Mudding joints is the most difficult and time-consuming part of hanging drywall. The fewer joints you have, the better your room will look.
How We Calculate Consumables
- Screws: You will need approximately 1 lb of 1-¼" drywall screws for every 500 square feet of drywall. (Roughly 32 screws per 4x8 sheet).
- Joint Tape: You will need about 370 feet of paper or mesh joint tape per 1,000 square feet of drywall. Most standard rolls are 250 feet.

Should I use 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch drywall? +
1/2-inch drywall is the standard for almost all residential interior walls. 5/8-inch drywall (often called "Type X") is heavier, more fire-resistant, and provides better soundproofing. 5/8-inch is required by code for ceilings in garages where there is living space above.
Why do we add 10% waste? +
Drywall isn't a jigsaw puzzle—you can't tape dozens of tiny scrap pieces together to finish a wall. You want large, continuous pieces. Because of this, you will have off-cuts around corners, doors, and windows that will end up in the trash. 10% is the industry standard waste buffer.
