What is FFMI?
FFMI (Fat-Free Mass Index) is a fitness metric that goes beyond BMI. While BMI only cares about how heavy you are relative to your height, FFMI specifically measures how much muscle and lean tissue you carry on your frame.
It is famously used by bodybuilders to determine if an athlete is likely "natty" (natural) or using performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs).
FFMI Scoring Scale (Men)
Dr. Harrison Pope conducted a famous study in 1995 analyzing the FFMI of both natural athletes and steroid users. Based on that research, here is how FFMI is generally categorized for men:
- 16 - 17: Below Average
- 18 - 19: Average / Normal
- 20 - 21: Above Average (Athletic)
- 22 - 23: Excellent (Advanced natural lifter)
- 24 - 25: Genetic Limit (Extremely rare without elite genetics)
- 26+: Strongly indicative of performance-enhancing drug use
Note: Women naturally carry higher body fat and lower lean mass. The natural limit for women is generally considered to be around an FFMI of 21.
