Why is Pool Volume Important?

Knowing your pool's exact volume is the most important piece of information for pool maintenance. Every chemical you add to the water—whether it's chlorine, algaecide, clarifier, or acid—requires a specific dosage based on the number of gallons in your pool.

If you overestimate your volume, you will waste money on chemicals and risk bleaching your liner. If you underestimate it, you won't kill the algae and bacteria, leading to a cloudy, green pool.

The Math Behind the Calculator

  • Rectangular Pools: Length × Width × Average Depth = Cubic Feet. Then multiply Cubic Feet by 7.48 to get gallons.
  • Round Pools: Radius × Radius × 3.14 (Pi) × Average Depth = Cubic Feet. Then multiply by 7.48 to get gallons. (The radius is half of the diameter).
  • Freeform / Kidney Pools: These are trickier. Usually, you treat them like a rectangle by taking the maximum length, and then measuring the width at two different points and averaging them. Finally, multiply the result by 0.45 instead of 7.48 to account for the curved edges.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does pool water weigh? +
Water is incredibly heavy! One cubic foot of water (7.48 gallons) weighs about 62.4 pounds. A standard 20,000-gallon pool contains roughly 166,000 pounds of water.
