How Does the Calculator Work?
Puppies do not grow at a straight, linear pace. They grow extremely fast in their first 4 months, and then their growth slows down as they approach adulthood. The formula used to predict their final size depends heavily on their breed size:
- Toy & Small Breeds: They mature very quickly. They usually reach half of their adult weight at just 12 weeks old, and stop growing entirely around 8 to 10 months.
- Medium & Large Breeds: They usually reach half of their adult weight around 16 to 20 weeks old, and finish growing around 12 to 14 months.
- Giant Breeds: They mature extremely slowly. They may not reach full adult weight until they are 18 to 24 months old!
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I predict a mixed breed's weight? +
Mixed breeds (mutts) are notoriously difficult to predict because you never know which parent's or grandparent's genes will be dominant for size. However, using this calculator with the "Medium" setting is usually the safest estimate.
Why do you need the age in weeks? +
A puppy's growth rate changes week by week. Entering "3 months" is too vague (it could mean 12 weeks or 15 weeks), which would dramatically alter the math in the prediction formula.
