Should I buy bags or order bulk delivery?
If your project requires less than 1.5 cubic yards (about 80 bags), it might be cheaper to drive your pickup truck to Home Depot and load it with bags. If you need more than 1.5 cubic yards, you will save hundreds of dollars (and save your back) by calling a local nursery and having a dump truck deliver it to your driveway.
How much does a yard of dirt weigh?
It depends heavily on moisture content. Bone dry topsoil weighs about 2,000 lbs (1 ton) per cubic yard. If it recently rained, that same cubic yard of wet dirt can weigh up to 3,000 lbs! Most standard half-ton pickup trucks (like an F-150) can safely haul a maximum of 1 to 1.5 cubic yards of dry soil in the bed.
