What is Cumulative GPA?
A Cumulative GPA (also known as an overall GPA) represents your average academic performance across all the semesters you have completed in high school or college. It combines every grade and credit you have earned into one final number.
The Formula for Cumulative GPA
To calculate a cumulative GPA manually, you can't just average your semester GPAs together. You must use total grade points and total credits.
Total Previous Grade Points = Current GPA × Previous Credits
New Semester Grade Points = Sum of (Course Grade × Course Credits)
New Cumulative GPA = (Total Previous Points + New Semester Points) / (Previous Credits + New Semester Credits)
Why it is hard to raise your Cumulative GPA later on
As you progress through your degree and earn more credits, your cumulative GPA becomes "heavier" and harder to change. For example, if you have 100 credits with a 3.0 GPA, earning a 4.0 in a 3-credit class will barely raise your overall GPA. This is why doing well in your freshman and sophomore years is crucial.
