How to Use the High School GPA Calculator

  1. Enter your courses โ€” Type the name of your class (e.g., "Biology"). This is optional but helps you keep track.
  2. Select your Grade โ€” Choose the letter grade you received (A+, A, A-, B+, etc.).
  3. Enter Credits โ€” Most high school courses are worth 1 or 0.5 credits.
  4. Select Course Weight โ€” Choose Regular (standard 4.0 scale), Honors (+0.5 boost), or AP / College / IB (+1.0 boost).
  5. Check Results โ€” The calculator updates automatically. Unweighted GPA ignores class difficulty, while Weighted GPA gives you extra credit for harder classes.

What is GPA and How is it Calculated?

GPA (Grade Point Average) is a standard numerical representation of your academic performance in high school. It is calculated by converting your letter grades into a numerical scale (usually 0 to 4.0), multiplying by the course credits, and dividing by the total number of credits taken.

Unweighted vs. Weighted GPA

There are two main types of GPA used by high schools and colleges:

  • Unweighted GPA: Measured on a scale of 0 to 4.0. It does not take the difficulty of your classes into account. An "A" in regular English and an "A" in AP Physics both equal 4.0.
  • Weighted GPA: Designed to reward students for taking rigorous courses. Honors classes typically add 0.5 points (A = 4.5), and Advanced Placement (AP), IB, or College-level classes add 1.0 point (A = 5.0). This allows a student's GPA to exceed a 4.0.

Note: Different school districts may have slight variations in their grading scales. Our calculator uses the standard College Board scale.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a good GPA for high school? +
A good high school GPA is generally considered to be 3.0 (a "B" average) or higher. For highly competitive universities (Ivy League), an unweighted GPA of 3.8 to 4.0 along with a high weighted GPA (showing AP/Honors rigor) is typically expected.
Does college look at weighted or unweighted GPA? +
Colleges look at both. However, many colleges actually recalculate your GPA using their own unweighted scale to compare students from different high schools fairly, while strongly considering the rigor (AP/IB/Honors) of the classes you took.
Can I have a 5.0 GPA? +
Yes, but only on a Weighted GPA scale. If you take all AP or IB classes (which carry a +1.0 weight) and earn straight A's, your weighted GPA could be a 5.0. On an unweighted scale, the maximum is always a 4.0.
What if my school doesn't use A+ or A-? +
If your school only gives straight letter grades (A, B, C, D, F), simply select the flat letter grade from the dropdown (e.g., choose "A" instead of "A-"). The calculator will map it correctly to 4.0, 3.0, 2.0, etc.
